Their latest triumph came against American University on Senior Night, a resounding 50-3 victory that showcased the Nittany Lions’ depth and talent.
The atmosphere in Rec Hall was electric as Penn State honored its nine graduating seniors.
The crowd was treated to a wrestling clinic, as the Nittany Lions won nine of the ten bouts, securing bonus points in each of those victories. Five pins and four technical falls highlighted the team’s offensive firepower, leaving no doubt about their superiority.
While the night belonged to the Nittany Lions, there was a special moment for local wrestling fans as Bald Eagle Area graduate Coen Bainey returned to compete in Rec Hall as a member of the American University team.
Bainey acknowledged the special significance of the event, but emphasized his focus on the competition. He spoke of the need to balance enjoying the moment with maintaining a competitive mindset.
Bainey’s match against Penn State’s Luke Lilledahl proved to be a tough test.
Lilledahl showcased his skills with six takedowns, ultimately securing a 20-3 technical fall in just over five minutes. Despite the loss, Bainey expressed his intention to savor the experience more in future appearances.
The lone bright spot for American University came from Raymond Lopez, who secured a hard-fought 9-7 victory over Kyison Garcia with a late takedown. However, this proved to be an isolated incident as Penn State resumed its dominant performance.
Beau Bartlett, one of the honored seniors, delivered a performance for the ages in his final Rec Hall appearance. After the break, Mitchell Mesenbrink quickly secured his 15th technical fall of the season. The pin parade began with Levi Haines securing a fall in the second period. Carter Starocci, another senior wrestling in his final Rec Hall match, made it a night to remember with a pin in just over two minutes. Starocci expressed his love for wrestling in Rec Hall and the special connection he feels with the fans.
Josh Barr recorded the fastest pin of the night, securing a fall in just over a minute. Greg Kerkvliet closed out the dual with a pin in his final Rec Hall match, capping off a dominant performance for the Nittany Lions.
With the regular season behind them, Penn State now sets its sights on the Big Ten Championship. Coach Cael Sanderson expressed confidence in his team’s health and readiness for the postseason.
