This week, Michigan wrestling coach Sean Bormet traveled to visit Vinny Freeman, the son of Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman, at the family’s Indiana home, entering rival territory on the recruiting trail. Bormet is in his seventh year as head coach.
According to Indiana Mat, Vinny, a junior at Penn High School in Mishawaka, weighs 175 pounds, which puts him third in the state. In addition to being a safety on the football team, he is 27-2 this season.
Vinnie shared a picture of himself standing with Bormet and his father after the visit. Vinny wrote, “Excellent home visit with Coach Sean Bormet.” “I appreciate you coming by.”
Marcus played football at Ohio State in addition to coaching at a rival university. However, Michigan coaches aren’t afraid to recruit the sons of famous athletes who attended rival universities.
In its 2025 recruiting class, the Wolverines’ football program signed three-star offensive lineman Kaden Strayhorn, the son of former Michigan State defensive lineman Jason Strayhorn, and quarterback Chase Herbstreit, the son of former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit.
Although Vinny has plenty of time to decide which college to attend, Bormet’s visit suggests that they are very interested in bringing him to Ann Arbor. In all five seasons under Bormet’s leadership (excluding the COVID-19 season), Michigan has placed in the top six at the NCAAs.
Michigan is 5-4 going into Friday’s game against No. 1 Penn State and is ranked No. 19 nationally this season.
